What is it?

In Your Right Mind is a personal development program – applicable to both companies and individuals – which focuses on what are sometimes referred to as “Right Brain” skills.

The skill set developed by the program involves creativity, lateral thinking, memory management and enhancement, emotional intelligence, personal management using the subconscious mind… plus much more.

Why “In Your Right Mind”?

Around 1860, scientists first realized that the different sides of the brain might control different functions. Like most scientific discoveries, this happened almost by accident. People with head injuries to various parts of the brain often exhibited loss of one or more specific functions and, by building up a profile of that loss and noting the site of the various injuries, conclusions were drawn about which side of the brain controlled which abilities.

From this research came the concept of Left Brain/Right Brain where the left side seemed to control the logical processes such as number skills, language comprehension and a wide range of reality-based functions, while the Right Brain was the source of more creative skills including imagination, anticipation and big-picture thinking. The terminology has been used for many decades.

Recent discoveries have shown that it is not quite so simple, with brain activity, which manifests as electrical impulses, exhibited in a number of different areas – not always only on one side - when most functions are in process. Thus a modern neuroscientist might question anyone talking about Left or Right Brain functions in this way.

For this reason the IN YOUR RIGHT MIND program prefers to use Left Mind/Right Mind terminology with Left Mind representing the logical processes – wherever they originate in the brain - and Right Mind the creative ones. The program itself concentrates on stimulating a wide range of Right Mind capabilities.

Of course, the expression “In Your Right Mind” has another meaning. We often say “no one in their right mind would do that” when we see or hear of someone doing something which makes no sense.

In fact, a lack of creative thinking can cause people to do or say things which might indicate they are not “in their right mind”. This is often due to a lack of personal skills as well as poor management and training practices.

Here is an example of this type of situation:

[An example (and a true story): The customer of a major Hong Kong internet service provider was on an overseas holiday. After being unable to set up a connection to receive email, he contacted his ISP Customer Service centre from his overseas location.

The operator, on being fully briefed on the situation and the customer’s location, first told him that she would have the technical department call him back, then that the only number they could call was his Hong Kong number where no one was present.

The problem was that the operator’s rules of engagement said that:

  1. All enquiries had to result in a “call back” by the technical staff. Calls could not be put through directly.

  2. The only number the technical staff could call back on was the “registered” number of the client which, of course, was the local number

There was an impasse which was only resolved when the customer made contact with a senior supervisor via a later phone call.

The moral of this tale? This is definitely a “not in your right mind “situation! A small part of the blame must go to the operator for not realizing this was a situation “out of the box” and responding sensibly by bending the rules. Yet the major blame surely must be laid on the company training and procedures. The operator was not empowered and the standard operating procedure had no Right Mind aspects at all.]

How does the IN YOUR RIGHT MIND program work?

Most people are totally unaware of the full range of skills and abilities they already possess. This program aims to educate them to some degree about how their mind works so they can take full advantage of these skills and abilities.

In a lively, interesting four-module presentation, participants are introduced to a large number of Right Mind abilities which lead to far greater personal and inter-personal skills. In the ideal situation, participants have a three-month contact with the program during which time they are fully supported e.g. by online learning modules, to ensure maximum long-term benefit is obtained.

What does that mean for the individual or the company?

There are a host of important deliverables and measurable learning outcomes which result from the process. Detailed discussion of these outcomes, with client companies, has confirmed that they closely match the areas management itself has identified as vital for positive development of their workforce.

The vast majority of people go through life without ever getting close to realizing their full potential. They can be trained in how to perform a task related to their work, and they can probably perform that task quite well. They can be trained to work as a team
in order to achieve the company goals etc.

However, the fact is they are usually operating at around 10-20% of optimum, no matter how hard they work. This is simply because they don’t understand their own potential.

You might wonder about the two photographs on the right hand side of the page. They both show the IN YOUR RIGHT MIND brain, first with ChiLab Art Director Tony Yau and Managing Director Bruce Stinson while the second shows the brain in the beautifully manicured hands of ChiLab's Wing Chan.

What is this all about?

This is a desktop reminder, given to all course participants. The caption says it all: "STAY IN YOUR RIGHT MIND" - excellent advice!

The In Your Right Mind program opens up a wide range of opportunities. The end result is happier, more fulfilled people and a much better overall result for the organization that employs them.
